It’s makeover time.

If you’ve tumbled onto my pages recently you may have noticed something a little awry at ismithwords… yes I have donned that paisley pale blue hospital gown, gone under the web surgeons knife and come back refreshed and reinvented.

      1. I see what you mean. When I tried self-hosted WordPress, I was unpleasantly surprised how much more difficult everything was. You clearly figured it out just fine though.

          An unpleasant surprise indeed! I lost all my likes, that was fun, and the posts don’t come up in the reader for anyone to see very quickly any more. How are you going about commenting on other blogs, or do you just stick to reading wordpress.com ones? It is a vortex of confusion.

          1. The fact that posts from self-hosted blogs show up in the Reader late or – in my experience – not at all is a great drawback. I wonder why WordPress don’t fix this, it’s quite a high priority issue. It’s the reason why I wouldn’t choose to have my blog self-hosted. I follow some self-hosted blogs, but it’s more hassle, I need to remember to check on them occasionally to see what posts I missed because they didn’t show in the Reader.

            I do self-hosted only when I do portofolio-like presentation sites for myself or others, here the community is not a factor. And it’s true that you can customise your blog better and enhance its functionality when you are self-hosted and can use plugins.

            I didn’t realise that one loses the likes when transitioning to the self-hosted solution. That’s insane. I wish you the best of luck in coping!

              I’m not sure they knew it was a problem, I spoke to them a few weeks ago and they were looking into it for me, and they emailed back last week saying there was some major glitch in the system, which is why .org users’ posts weren’t showing up at all, but no one had brought it to their attention so they didn’t actually know! They will still only appear to those who already follow you though, so how you’re supposed to engage new readers and tap into the wordpress community further I do not know! So so frustrating. I’m sure I will answer my own questions as time goes by and I learn more… hopefully anyway! 🙂

              1. Oh I see! I don’t have a great experience with asking WordPress staff to fix major things – they’re helpful when I can’t do something that the app can do, but when it’s about something they’d have to implement, I’ve found that there’s little point in even bringing the issue up… I do hope your experience will be better. It would be great if the problem with the Reader for self-hosted blogs was resolved.

                That’s a shame, I’ve found most of them quite helpful on the live chat, although a couple were a little dismissive :/ They really should change the reader thing, I’m sure they get a lot of complaints about that!
